What Our Users Say

Hands working on robot with breadboard circuit

I love your Intro to Robotics Course. The lessons are very detailed. And the combination of video and reading was really good. I had a few problems and Eric was alway available for email questions (not sure he sleeps). I have just started going through it for the second time. Thank you so much. Two thumbs up. Best kit/class ever.

Sample Lesson

RFID Reader Project

In Lesson B-11 you will learn to use an RFID reader in your projects. Once it's installed in your circuit, you will write the code to program the access cards and then you can tie access to other functions in a project such as keeping a data log or activating an alarm.

Sample Lesson

Raspberry Pi Camera Project

Gather real time data and write programs to react to it. Lesson C-12 will teach you to use a Raspberry Pi camera. Later on in the course, you'll use those skills to install the camera on the robot and create decision making programs based on what the robot sees.

Install and Configure a Robot's Motors

Building a fully mobile and programmable robot means getting those motors installed and calibrated so the robots movements can be accurately controlled. In Lesson D-3 you'll work through installing the motors while building the robot chassis. Later in Lessons D-10 and D-11 you'll learn to work with a motor drive IC, draw on your pulse width modulation knowledge from a previous lesson, and write the code to calibrate the motors.

Beginners Welcome

Not sure where to start on your own projects? Our courses were designed with beginners in mind.

Our courses start with the fundamentals to ensure you have a solid understanding of how every part of a circuit works, how to write each line of code, and how to use a Rapsberry Pi in your projects.

You'll then build on that knowledge systematically lesson-by-lesson to work with increasingly complex components, code, and projects.

By the time you reach the end of the Robotics Course, you'll not only have built a fully mobile and programmable robot, but you'll also have gained a strong skill set (and the equipment) you'll need to tackle your own projects.

In addition to Online Classroom access and the equipment kit you'll receive with your order, you will need:

  • Internet Access and a Computer or Tablet to Access the Online Classroom: Course lessons, including videos, are provided via the online classroom. Learning materials cannot be downloaded or used offline.
  • Computer Monitor and HDMI Cable: Used to interface with the Raspberry Pi. A television can also be used if it has HDMI inputs. A laptop computer or Chromebook will not work for this purpose as they only have an HDMI-output port.
  • Keyboard and Mouse: Used to interface with the Raspberry Pi. A wired USB keyboard and mouse will communicate more reliably with the Raspberry Pi (and cost less) than a wireless model. There is typically an option available on Amazon for $15-$20.
  • AA Batteries
  • Desktop Computer, Laptop, or Chromebook: This can be the same device used to access the online classroom; it is used for networking lessons.
  • Anti-Static Mat: Highly recommended to prevent damage to more sensitive equipment such as the Raspberry Pi camera. Amazon typically has an option available for under $25.
  • 9v Battery
  • USB Drive: Minimum 4 gb
  • Electrical Tape: Used to build a track on the floor for the robot to follow; use black electrical tape if you have light colored flooring, use white electrical tape if you have dark colored flooring.
  • USB to SD Card Adapter: For an optional activity to teach you to back up your SD card to your computer. A very useful skill as your projects grow in complexity.

My Grandson is 12 and he has an easy time going through the lessons as self study and he is enjoying it and says it is easy to follow. He tells me he has setup the LED circuit and the jumper wire so far. He really likes the breadboard. My grandson figured out how to set up games on PI because he wanted the game Minecraft and I figured it would be great if he learned some basic electronics and programming....he'll do amazing things, I am sure. We think we may be color blind🤣🤣. My son really likes it so far; he trouble shoots everything himself. I was worried about him doing it as he is only 12 but he has taken stem classes since he was 10 and we were running out of classes(AP CS is only thing left in his curriculum and I think 12 too young). We are only on level A but he is doing well and says he understands everything. I'll give a review when we reach each level. I'm uncomfortable giving a recommendation since we haven't finished but at this point it's a yes.

I had previous electronics and programming experience, so the first lessons were very easy for me, but still informative, and worthwhile as preparation for the more advanced lessons. I think a good balance has been struck between the amount of theory and practical experience. My only real issue has been something outside of the coursework per se: Some of the GPIO pins on my Raspberry Pi do not work. I've been meaning to test every pin for both input and output, but haven't gotten around to it. So far, I know that GPIO pin 27 output doesn't work, and pin 13 input doesn't work. So far, I've been able to work around this, but I'm not sure if any future libraries might use dedicated pins. (I have another Raspberry Pi, and have followed ESD precautions, etc., so I'm pretty sure this is how the Pi arrived.) Great job on the course so far! I'm almost done with Level B and will continue.
